Ecological Observations on Hybrid Populations of European Plethodontid Salamanders, Genus Speleomantes

چکیده

Speleomantes are the only plethodontid salamanders present in Europe. Multiple studies have been performed to investigate trophic niche of eight species, but none these included hybrid populations. For first time, we studied five Each population was surveyed twice 2020, and stomach flushing on each captured salamander; is a harmless technique that allows contents be inspected. We also assessed potential divergence size body condition between natural introduced hybrids, their parental species. Previously collected data were increase robustness analyses. In 33 out 134 sampled recognized 81 items belonging 11 prey categories. The frequency empty stomachs higher females individuals from populations, whereas largest number consumed by males. compared total length 685 adult three types hybrids (sub)species. Three group (one two species) showed significantly larger size, no difference observed. This study provided novel ecological information insights into species terms condition. discuss our findings, formulate several hypotheses should tested future.

Resistance to Chytridiomycosis in European Plethodontid Salamanders of the Genus Speleomantes

North America and the neotropics harbor nearly all species of plethodontid salamanders. In contrast, this family of caudate amphibians is represented in Europe and Asia by two genera, Speleomantes and Karsenia, which are confined to small geographic ranges. Compared to neotropical and North American plethodontids, mortality attributed to chytridiomycosis caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis...

Evolution of paedomorphosis in plethodontid salamanders: ecological correlates and re-evolution of metamorphosis.

Life-history modes can profoundly impact the biology of a species, and a classic example is the dichotomy between metamorphic (biphasic) and paedomorphic (permanently aquatic) life-history strategies in salamanders. However, despite centuries of research on this system, several basic questions about the evolution of paedomorphosis in salamanders have not been addressed. Here, we use a nearly co...

Thermal equilibrium and temperature differences among body regions in European plethodontid salamanders.

Information on species thermal physiology is extremely important to understand species responses to environmental heterogeneity and changes. Thermography is an emerging technology that allows high resolution and accurate measurement of body temperature, but until now it has not been used to study thermal physiology of amphibians in the wild. Hydromantes terrestrial salamanders are strongly depe...

Natural History Constrains the Macroevolution of Foot Morphology in European Plethodontid Salamanders.

The natural history of organisms can have major effects on the tempo and mode of evolution, but few examples show how unique natural histories affect rates of evolution at macroevolutionary scales. European plethodontid salamanders (Plethodontidae: Hydromantes) display a particular natural history relative to other members of the family. Hydromantes commonly occupy caves and small crevices, whe...

Molecular mechanisms of extensive mitochondrial gene rearrangement in plethodontid salamanders.

Extensive gene rearrangement is reported in the mitochondrial genomes of lungless salamanders (Plethodontidae). In each genome with a novel gene order, there is evidence that the rearrangement was mediated by duplication of part of the mitochondrial genome, including the presence of both pseudogenes and additional, presumably functional, copies of duplicated genes. All rearrangement-mediating d...
